UNISON is supporting the Children's Food Bill so that there is a legal obligation to:

  • Provide healthy school meals
  • End junk food advertising to children
  • Stop junk food vending in schools
  • Promote more fruit and vegetables
  • Teach cooking and healthy food skills
The government is reviewing school meals (UNISON represents staff on the review panel) and will introduce new stricter nutritional guidelines in 2006. it is also considering a range of recommendations, which will be published in September for consultation. Branches will be sent the proposals in the Autumn and we will consult the membership on our response.
The broadcast regulator, Ofcom, has been asked to review codes on television advertising and promotion of food and drink to children. These initiatives do not invaildate the bill, which if it becomes law will regulate the extent to which companies can exploit children and endanger their health in the name of profit.
Mary Creagh MP presented the bill to parliament on 22nd June. But it will need the support of 100 MPs on 28th October to survive a second reading and progress to committee stage.
