UNISON is concerned that despite the government's own admission that the private finance initiative (PFI) for housing is flawed and expensive, it is continuing with plans to use the scheme to increase the supply of housing and reburish existing housing to a decent standard.
Seven councils have now been asked to develop housing PFI schemes worth around £500, involving refurbishment and building of more than 5,000 social homes.

The councils are Oldham, Lewisham, Manchester, Weymouth & Portland, Woking, Guildford and Medway.
PFI housing schemes have not worked or delivered. Of the eight pathfinder schemes, only 3 have been signed and two - Camden and Ashford PFI housing schemes had to be abandoned altogether because they were too expensive.

UNISON believes that direst investment using investment allowances is the simplest, quickest and most cost effective means of achieving the decent standard.
