The Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott has escalated the pensions dispute by rushing ahead with the governments changes to tje local government pensions. UNISON has condemned Prescott's "provocative" action which came despite the trade unions putting forward proposals for resolving the dispute.
"John Prescott's action, in laying an order in Parliament to cut pension rights, is provocative, premature and unnesessary, said UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis. it will further inflame the anger felt by our members at the way in which they are being treated by their government and their employers. Prescott did not need to lay the order abolishing the Rule of 85, until Parliament's summer recess in July. His decision to do this has indicated his rejection of the union's new proposals for joint talks.
