Justice and Equality for LGPS Members Print E-mail
As the 2nd November talks on the furure of the Local Government Pension Scheme get nearer, we are asking everyone in UNISON to do their bit to ensure that members of the Local Government Pension Scheme get equal treatment with NHS workers, Civil Servants and Teachers.
The agreement reached in the Public Services Forum last week will mean that existing members of the NHS, Civil Service and teaching schemes will rightly receive lifetome protection of their pension age and benefits.  The future pension age will be raised to 65, but new members will be able to pay additional contributions in order to retire at 60.

The Government has also recognised that we need time to negotiate on the future look of the NHS pension scheme.  Meanwhile, the Local Government Association and the employers are expecting us to agree their proposal by next week or face the possible imposition of measures by John Prescott to recoup the 'cost' of revoking the regulations which would have removed the 85 Rule.  It can't be done.

Enough is enough!

LGPS members in local government, police, probation, Higher Education, Further Education and the private and voluntary sectors deserve equal treatment.  We are being asked by the Government to provide joined up Public Services by working more closely with colleagues in the NHS and civil service.  We are doing so, but in return we want joined up pensions.  The LGPS is already the least favourable public sector pension scheme.  If the LGA is allowed to get away with its proposals, we wonn't even be poor relations.  We'll be right outside the public sector pensions family.
