UNISON is concerned that the target-driven rush to achieve efficiencies will undermine public services and will lead to privatisation, job losses and cuts in pensions, sick leave and conditions for staff. UNISON is alarmed that plans to achieve efficiencies by public bodies show that hugh cut backs have to be made, particularly in procurement and Corporate Services.
A recent survey by the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) showed that adult social care is the biggest single area of savings, representing almost 17% of councils' total savings. Efficiency saving from labour-intensive services, such as adult social care are likely to be made at the cost of jobs and squeezing conditions of service like pensions and sick leave. But how can job cuts and the threat of privatisation increase efficiency?
