Herts County Branch supported the 3rd Careers Teachers and Heads Workshop the objective of it is to raise awareness and skills of career teachers in Schools in East Africa to enable them to deliver Careers Education and Guidance (CEG) to 14 - 19 years old.
Over the 5 days the workshop attracted the participation of 41 headmasters and teachers from Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Some of whom travelled for 3 days to arrive at the venue. For the first time they had a participant from Uganda, a country they will need to specifically focus for training in the near future. All the participants rated the modules from very good to excellent. Also the four trainers from UK were impressed by the commitment and achievements of the School since the 2nd CTW, which was hled in Dar in January 2005. Most of the trainers had taken annual leave to deliver the training. They felt their efforts were worth while. The following are recommendations of the 3CTW 1. That the formation of the East Africa Careers Practitioners Association (EACGPA) will enhance the objectives. 2. That the role of the career teacher will be complemented in the presence of Careers Advisers who will need to be trained to the NVQ level 3 and 4 in guidance. 3. In future the trained Careers Advisers will have a bigger role in providing training to a wider range of schools throughout the 3 countries. Future Plans Once the Association is registered, the cost of which is estimated at £1500, it will generate income from subsciptions from schools, practitioners and grants from local and international organisations, A secretariat for EACGPA would provide a more consistent and a wider range of services to its members. In order to get more participants from Uganda, it was felt that it may be worth exploring organising a basic and heads training in June 2007 in Kampala. The anticipated outcome of this would be that in the 4th CTW in Nairobi in 2008 there would have a bigger number of participants from Uganda for the Intermediate training. We are also planning to incorporate participants from the 3CTW to run some of the modules in the workshop in Kampala. Without contributions from Herts County Branch of UNISON and other organisations the 3CTW would not have been possible. |
