The official word from the NJC is as follows: The NJC Employers’ Side met today (17.10.08) and agreed to UNISON’s request to pay the 2008-9 pay award ‘on account’ pending the arbitration process. This means that members should receive both the increase on their pay and back-pay from 1 April 2008 in November pay packets or in December at the latest. A circular will be going to councils today to inform them of the decision. |

UNISON members in local government across the country have voted by 55% to 45% for a programme of sustained strike action over a 2.45% pay offer. The National Joint Council Committee will now meet to decide what action to recommend to the union's industrial action committee that meets on Friday 27th June. Commenting on the ballot result, general secretary Dave Prentis said: "This is a solid vote for action and a clear message to the local governments employers that our members are willing to fight for a decent pay rise. |

TUC leaders have urged the Chancellor to introduce a new approach on public-service pay, to safeguard living standards. A delegation led by TUC President and UNISON General Secretary Dave Prentis, and General Secretary Brendan Barber, told Alistair Darling that it was unfair for public servants to be expected to accept pay settlements that fall short of inflation. |

Local Government workers across England, Wales and Northern Ireland have slammed this years below inflation annual pay award but stopped short of outright industrial action at this satge, effectively putting employers and the Government in the "last Chance saloon" over pay. |
